This painting of Squadron Leader Max Aitken and Flying Officer Billy Fiske flying their Hurricane Mk I fighters in close formation epitomises the Special Relationship on so many levels. The most obvious is that relationship between fellow fighter pilots of the elite No 601 Squadron; there is the bond between Britain and America and there is the common cause to defeat Hitler’s Germany.
This morning patrol took place on 13 July 1940, a month before Billy Fiske suffered return fire from the Stuka he had destroyed and crashed in flames at RAF Tangmere on 17 August 1940. Today, he is remembered by the Billy Fiske Foundation as a constant reminder of the trans-Atlantic bond.
