GUNFIGHTER – North American Aviation P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter” based at RAF Wormingford, England with the 343rd Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, USAAF. The 55th Fighter Group was the first American Air Corp unit to become operational in Europe, first to fly over Berlin and one of the units that provided top cover over the Invasion Beaches of Normandy on “D-Day”, 6th June 1944. The P-51 was originally designed for the Royal Air Force who initially used it in the low-level reconnaissance/fighter role. However, higher altitude performance was disappointing until the airframe was re-engined with the powerful Rolls Royce designed Merlin engine. Within a short space of time the aircraft was transformed into what proved to be an exceptional long-range high altitude escort fighter, arguably one of the finest of the War.
