Operation Chastise – The dams raid was conceived by an engineer – Barnes Wallis and led by a legendary pilot, Wing Commander Guy Gibson. He was tasked with putting together a squadron of experienced aircrew to deliver a decisive blow to the enemy. Mounted on the night of 16-17 May 1943, the mission proved to be a great success with two dams being breached and much damage inflicted. But, the cost was high.
Of the 19 Lancasters that took part, eight failed to return and 53 men paid the ultimate sacrifice. Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross and 34 other decorations were presented to airmen. History would testify to their skill and courage.
