Climb Angels 15 – It’s 11:00 hours on Sunday, 15th September 1940. Hawker Hurricanes of 73 Squadron form up after take-off from Castle Camps (known as ‘Freddie 1’) their mission to patrol Chelmsford at 15,000 feet. The Squadron have mustered 10 aircraft with a mix of experienced and rookie pilots; amongst them is a 22 year old combat veteran of The Battle for France, Pilot Officer Roy Marchand. Not being at full Squadron strength, Blue and Green Sections of ‘B’ Flight are the main formation with four lookouts on the Port and Starboard sides. At 11:30 hours the Squadron was vectored South of the Thames Estuary to intercept a large inbound enemy raid. Following fierce combat, Squadron pilots, exhausted and out of ammunition, returned to base having claimed 3 enemy fighters destroyed. All flight crew members were accounted for, apart from one pilot missing, P/O Marchand. A few hours later it was confirmed that, tragically, Roy had lost his life whilst flying Hurricane P3865 K-TP, in a crash at Teynham near Sittingbourne. During the great air battles above Britain, many brave young pilots made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We will remember them.
