Tracing its ancestry back to the Avro Manchester, via the Lancaster and Lincoln bombers, the trusty Shackleton entered RAF service in the early 1950’s as a long-range maritime patrol aircraft. Through various marks, the aircraft was mainly powered by four mighty Rolls Royce Griffon engines, that afforded impressive reliability and endurance on missions lasting up to twelve hours in duration, over many years of service. In the early 70’s, twelve Shackleton airframes were selected for conversion to AEW Mk.2 standard and thereafter No.8 Squadron provided Britain with its airborne early warning protection, for the best part of 20 years. The Squadron was originally based at RAF Kinloss before moving to its new home at RAF Lossiemouth in 1973, where they proudly served until disbandment in 1991.
