Classic meets classical. The similarities between the wonderful architectural brilliance of Salisbury Cathedral and the beautiful lines of the Spitfire are evident for all to see.
Salisbury Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican Cathedral built in the early English Gothic style between 1220 and 1320. The main body of the Cathedral was completed in only 38 years, from 1220 to 1258 which was a major achievement. The cathedral also has the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom, at 404 feet. It also contains a clock which is among the oldest working clocks in the world, and houses one of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta.
Brainchild of aeronautical engineer Reginald Joseph Mitchell, the Spitfire exemplified brilliant design and offered an outstanding aircraft that fought throughout the Second World War and beyond. Mitchell worked for Supermarine Aviation between 1920 and 1936, designing many aircraft. He is best remembered for his racing seaplanes, and of course, the wonderful Supermarine Spitfire.
