RAF Biggin Hill, late August 1940, acting Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Brian Kingcombe holds his section of 92 Squadron Spitfires in readiness for take-off, whilst 74 Squadron Spitfires land following combat. It’s going to be another busy time flying upwards of three sorties a day against the might of the Luftwaffe. During the next six weeks he led 92 on sixty-plus operations where the Squadron achieved the highest success rate of any Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Before being invalided out of the Royal Air Force in 1954, Brian Kingcombe rose to the rank of Group Captain, DSO, DFC & Bar and was considered, by many who served with him, to be one of the Second World War’s finest fighter leaders.
