It may be surprising to realise, that the thoroughbred Spitfire and the – some would say – ungainly looking Walrus, were actually built by the same manufacturer, Supermarine. However, appearances can be very deceptive. In RAF air-sea rescue operations during WW11, they made a formidable pairing. The Spitfire guided and protected whilst the Walrus rescued aircrew from the sea and returned them to safety. Many owed their lives to the bravery and skill of the rescue services.
