A Bristol Beaufighter on a night combat air patrol during 1941. The aircraft was heavily armed with 20mm cannons, machine guns and A1 airborne radar. It represented a leap forward in night time interception over the UK and scored many victories. One leading exponent of the Beaufighter in the nightfighting role was Flt. Lt. John Cunningham of 604 Squadron, based at Middle Wallop. During many of his victories his navigator was Sgt. Jimmy Rawnsley and working in unison they made a great team. Cunningham ended the war with 20 victories, 16 scored with the Beaufighter. ‘Starlight’ was the radio call sign for a ground control intercept radar station, near Sopley village in Hampshire. This station was responsible for tracking enemy aircraft approaching UK airspace in the southern sector and relayed vital radar information to defensive aircraft, giving them the best chance of a successful air intercept.
