The English Electric/BAC Lightning was the only single-seat supersonic fighter of British design to see service with the Royal Air Force. It was operational from 1960 to 1987. The aircraft possessed exceptional rate of climb and altitude performance, being capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2. Fighter pilots have described it as; ‘like flying a rocket ship’. A two-seat trainer version was produced and this too retained the ballistic nature of the beast.
