The Möhne Dam…Lancaster AJ-J flies into a hail of flak and cannon shells. Aircrew – Pilot: Flt. Lt. David Maltby controls height and attitude. Engineer: Sgt. Bill Hatton monitors and adjusts power and speed. Navigator: Sgt. Vivian Nicholson looks out of the starboard blister calling… “down, down, steady”. Rear Gunner: Sgt. Harold Simmonds is hanging on. Wireless Operator: Sgt. Anthony Stone monitors the spinning mine speed. Front Gunner: Sgt. Victor Hill fires on Dam defences, and last but not least, Bomb Aimer: Flg. Off. John Fort readies himself to press the release button. With an approach speed of 230mph, height precisely 60ft, mine spinning backwards at 500rpm and correct distance from the Dam wall reached – Fort calls… “BOMB GONE!” – Wg. Cdr. Guy Gibson’s Lancaster is seen out to starboard with all its nav lights and spot beams on, trying to draw away enemy fire. On this fifth bomb run the dam was finally breached.
‘Operation Chastise’ took place on 16-17 May 1943, using nineteen modified Lancasters of 617 Squadron, in three waves under the command of Gibson. The targets were the great dams of the Ruhr and Eder valleys, principally the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe. Tragically, fifty three aircrew made the ultimate sacrifice in the prosecution of this daring mission’s success and today we honour them by telling their story, remembering their courage and duty… Following the raid 617 Squadron were placed firmly in the history books and we proudly refer to them as ‘The Dambusters’.
