Wing Commander Guy Gibson’s Avro Lancaster AJ-G is prepared by ground crew for a mission that will go down in history as one of the most daring and courageous of the Second World War. 617 Squadron aircraft were loaded with the unique ‘Upkeep’ mine, designed by inventor Barnes Wallis to breach the great Dams of the Ruhr Valley. On the night of the 16-17 May 1943, fifteen Lancasters struck the dams and breached two of the primary targets, the Möhne and Eder.
