The Westland Whirlwind fighter was the RAF’s first single seat, twin-engined, cannon-armed fighter. It was fast, a delight to fly, an agile performer, especially at lower levels in the strike role attacking Axis airfields, trains and shipping. It could also more than hold its own in dogfights against Me109s and even Fw190s. Unfortunately, engine and production problems curtailed the potential development of this fine aircraft in favour of single engined fighter contemporaries.
